Antique Vehicle Inspections

Ever been stopped in your Corvair for not having a state inspection sticker? If you run antique plates, you already know that a safety inspection is not required. However, you would be amazed at how many police officers do not know this. Ray Morey provided this small reminder that you can clip or copy to carry with you.

Texas Motor Vehicle Law, Article XV, INSPECTION OF VEHICLES, Section 140. Compulsory inspection, uniform act pages 270-272. Paragraph H, page 272 states:

The provisions of this act shall not apply to the vehicles referred to in Subsection (a) of this section when moving under or bearing current "Factory-Delivery License Plates" or current "In-Transit License Plates." Nor shall the provisions of this Act apply to farm machinery, road-building equipment, farm trailers, paper dealer in-transit tag, machinery license, disaster license, parade license, prorate tabs, one-trip permits, ANTIQUE LICENSE, temporary 24-hour permits, permit license and all other vehicles required to have a slow-moving vehicle emblem under Section 139(b) of this act.

What all this government speak means is this: if you run Antique License plates, you do not need a safety inspection. However, you are greatly restricted to the miles and type of use for that vehicle. So don't get caught with Antique plates and a Rampside full of a couple of tons of brick, mortar, sand, and tools. The officer might not believe you!
