February

February 21,  2010 -  Economy Run

This was to be the first competition of four that will be used to determine a local club-level overall winner in a simulated Cole competiton. The other competitions will be an autocross, a rally, and a concours, just as at a CORSA national convention, only spaced out over the entire year. The idea was to give NTCA members a chance to experience a bit of what the real Cole competion would be like, even if they couldn't make it to the national convention. Clay Wispell described it best:

The February activity combined three things Carolyn and I wanted to do this year: have an economy run, visit an art museum, and eat at a 5-star restaurant. It was somewhat different from many of our activities – an economy run unlike any other. Instead of driving a prescribed route, you were given destinations - a start point, a check point, and an end point – and you made your own way between the points. An unofficial poll indicated most drivers chose major roads (if not freeways) that went in the general direct, rather than driving the absolute shortest routes through a bunch of back roads.

The start point was a Conoco station in Farmers Branch in north Dallas. I want to thank Ken, Diane, and Micah Richardson for watching the start point and getting all the sign-ins done. That was a big help and we do appreciate it very much.

The check point was one of the world’s premier art museums - the Kimball Art Museum in Fort Worth. We made arrangements for a guided tour through the museum’s permanent collection and saw sculptures and paintings by the old masters and some of the more modern painters. One of the paintings was by Michelangelo (the only one on public display in the on public display in the US) but I sensed our guide preferred the Picasso and Cezanne style of art

The end point was in Watauga, northeast of Fort Worth and generally headed back toward Dallas. That’s where we found another Conoco station and our 5-star restaurant. It is called Chef Point Café and lives in the convenience store part of the Conoco station.

CORSA Economy Run classes were used – manual transmission vehicles (subdivided into 110hp or less engines and 140hp engines}, automatics, turbos, FCs, Other Corvairs (Corvair bodied only, or Corvair engine only), and non Corvair. Relative to what we often see at the CORSA Conventions, we had a greater number of automatics and FCs entered and much fewer 140s. I guess that means that, relative to CORSA as a whole, we don’t like to shift but do like big, roomy things.

Winners were listed in our March newsletter. Everyone received a participant’s ribbon, those who placed also receive an appropriately marked ribbon, and the grand winner, Bob Gill, also received a trophy.

March

Dyno Session and Tank Drive -- CANCELED

March was shaping up to be an eventful month with a tech event one weekend and a really great family activity planned for the following weekend. Tom Wright was going to let us use his dynamometer to run our Corvairs for diagnostic purposes or to really, really fine tune your engine. The dynamometer failed and there wasn.t time to get it repaired. Sorry Tom, it was a great thought and most generous of you. I hope we can reschedule soon. The other activity was a trip to a military museum and, with dry ground, to drive a tank. On the appointed day it rained, and rained so well the roads were closed. Obviously, we weren.t going to even get into the museum part, much less drive the tank, so the activity was canceled. Sorry about that. I hope we can reschedule it soon – stay tuned.

April

April 9-10, 2010  -  Heart of Texas   (Overnighter) Hosted this year by ACCA.

April.s activity was HOT (Heart of Texas) hosted in San Marcos by the Alamo City Corvair Association. Most of us went down Friday and returned Sunday; Saturday was given over to ACCA hosted fun Corvair things.

The host hotel was the very nice Embassy Suites right off I-35. Friday night some of us chose up sides and went to the Gristmill for dinner. This is a „way cool. restaurant in Gruene, Texas (pronounced “green”) beside the Guadalupe River. Saturday.s Corvair activities started with a car show at Chuck Nash's Chevy dealership. There was a judging and a people's choice competition. Mike Raley won people[s choice and Rachel Grimes and Fred Rehders won in the judged competition. Most of the folks left for a tour around the country side, a Hill Country Cruise, after the car show. A few, however, stayed for a funkhana that used the same area as the car show did. Interestingly, That evening we had dinner, awards, door prizes, and a guest speaker at Dick's Classic Garage. As it turned out, Dick's Classic Garage was really a car museum, and as nice a car museum as you.ll find anywhere.

We had a catered BBQ dinner and awards in a museum area set aside for such things. The highlight of the evening was our guest speaker – Dollie Cole. She is the widow of Edward N. Cole, the father of the Corvair. And, she is a real „pistol. – a talented, very successful person in her own right, interesting to talk to, very generous with her time, and teller of some of the most wonderful tales you could ever imagine.

May

May 15 and 23, 2010 -  Autocross and Renaissance Festival

W e had two events in May - a visit to the Scarborough Renaissance Festival on the 15th and an autocross on the 23rd. Rain during the week threatened the Scarborough event, but late week forecasts looked good for the day so we decided it was a go. And we got what was predicted. Saturday proved to be clear and dry and the cloud cover kept the temperatures comfortable and, for whatever reason, the crowds were down so we could roam at will. That was a very nice experience.

The autocross was our second competitive event of the year. Equipe Rapide put on a very nice, efficient autocross that had 115 entrants, five of which were Corvairs. The faster “big iron” were typically in the 30 second mark, and all us normal folks were in the 40 second category. We were welcomed with open arms and put into our own class so we were competing among ourselves. We were allowed to ride with an experienced driver to get an idea of how to drive the course, plus, some of them would ride with us and critique our techniques. Mike Dobie and Bob Gill place first and second, respectively, in Equipe Rapide’s Corvair class. However, we used CORSA’s classes for our competition. Other results were posted in our June newsletter.

June

June 21-25, 2010  -  CORSA International Convention, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Lots of pictures of NTCA members at the convention were posted in our July newsletter, and a full accounting/retelling was given at the August 7 regular club meeting.

July

July 2010 - NTCA Annual Picnic

The annual club picnic was once again held at the home of Mike and Jennifer Boyle -- swimming pool, grill, margarita machine, the works! Thanks to the Boyles, and also to everyone who brought side dishes and other good stuff.

August

August 14, 2010 - Fort Worth Museum of Science and History

OMNI Theater showing of Van Gogh: Brush with Genius. Followed by BBQ dinner at the Railhead Smokehouse. Thanks to Diane and Ken Richardson for the arrangements.
